The Children's Forest Relay (Saturday 5 May, 2012)
Saturday May 5th dawned cloudy, damp and cold. By 1:30 pm, it was cloudy and not so cold. We had 4 teams competing in the 3 x 1.5k relay event. The course through the forest was a great example of a flat but winding Cross Country course. The sand, overlaid with pine needles and vegetation, was a bit firmer because of the recent rain. The course was well marked and provided spectators (enthusiastic parents and grandparents) with great vantage points from which to cheer on the runners. Size was no determinant of ability. Some of those little kids could really move! The important thing was to be there and run. Our kids did that. It gives them all a starting point against which to measure themselves for the next event. The winter season is just getting underway. The next two Cross Country opportunities are on May 19th at the Jane Paterson Races from Rawhiti Domain, our home turf, and the Holloway Races out at West Eyreton on June 9th.
Full results from the Children's Forest Relay are available on the Athletics Canterbury website. See the photo gallery for more photos from the relay.

New Balance 15k Road Race
The weather was cool and the wind picked up a bit but this did not stop new course records being set by both Nicki McFadzien (53:36) in the open women and Sam Wreford (46:29) in the open men.
Several club members ran well finishing in the placings including Dave Ridley (3rd open men), David Macdonald (1st M50+), Clive Kitchingman (2nd M50+), and Dianne Davis (1st W50+).
Full results are available on the Athletics Canterbury website. See the photo gallery for more photos. There is also a slide show of photos from the race available on You Tube.

Life Education Trust Fundraiser - FREE Entry to Christchurch Marathon (including Half, 10k, and Kids race)
For those who remember the Superhero Challenge, or fancy the idea of a free entry to one of the Christchurch Marathon events on June 3rd (Queens Birthday Weekend) in exchange for helping a good cause, here's your chance.
The Life Education Trust is offering you a chance for a free entry to the event of your choice and a free t-shirt, in exchange for undertaking to raise a minimum amount of sponsorship ($200 for the Full or Half Marathon, $150 for the 10k, or $50 for kids in the Mara'fun). If you can get 10 people to sponsor you $15 or $20 each, you're in the game - and once you get that far, the sky is the limit! There will be a special prize for the individual who raises the most. You don't even have to wear a silly costume - but you can if you want to!
Email Paul Coughlan if you are interested in this, and he will send you back the forms, along with instructions on how to set up your own free fundraising website along the lines of this one from 2009 www.fundraiseonline.co.nz/paulCoughlan. If this all just sounds too energetic, but you still want to help, sponsor a friend! Solid Energy have been a long-time supporter of the Life Education Trust, you can be too.
For more information on the Life Education Trust, and the work that the educators do with helping children in Canterbury make healthy lifestyle choices, including helping them cope with the sort of stress and change that is so prevalent in Canterbury at the moment, go to www.lifeeducation.org.nz - they rely on charitable donations to make this work, and your assistance is greatly appreciated.
